Buildup Complete Guide — From GK / CB / SB: Structured 'Forward Progression from Behind' in 4-3-3 / 3-2-5 / 2-3-5 Patterns
Buildup = organized ball progression from behind = core modern soccer tactic. Pep Guardiola's Barcelona-Bayern-City spread the philosophy worldwide. Covers GK·CB·SB positioning, 4-3-3 / 3-2-5 / 2-3-5 buildup forms, 3-step press-avoidance, Tier 1 examples (City / Liverpool / Brighton).
4 Buildup Principles
4 principles for successful rear progression.
P1: Numerical Superiority
Always +1 vs opponent press. 2-FW press → 3 (CB 2 + DMF 1) build; 3-FW → 4 (CB 2 + SB 2 inside) build. Pep's '+1 principle.'
P2: Vertical · Horizontal · Diagonal Pass Options
GK or CB with ball = 3-direction options. 1-direction = trapped under press. Teammates as 'wall · anchor · target' 3 roles.
P3: GK Joins Buildup
Modern GK = kick precision + foot skills mandatory. Ederson (City), Alisson (Liverpool) = 80%+ forward pass success. Youth GK must develop this.
P4: Halfspace Receiver
Without halfspace receiver, ball only goes side = predictable. SB cut inside (inverted SB) or CMF drop into halfspace = structured.
3 Basic Formations
Modern primary buildup forms.
4-3-3 → 2-3-5 Transform (City Style)
Defending 4-3-3 transforms attacking 2-3-5. CB 2 + SB 2 inside = build layer, CMF 3 = mid, FW 3 + inside SB 2 = attack 5. Pep's City standard. Highly fluid.
3-2-5 Buildup (Bayern Style)
Defending 3-4-3 attacks 3-2-5. CB 3 + DMF 2 = 5 build, WB 2 + FW 3 = 5 attack. Defense stability (CB 3) + attack depth (high WB). Bayern, Brighton.
4-4-2 Diamond (Classic + Effective)
Defending 4-4-2 attacks 4-1-2-1-2 diamond. DMF 1 + CMF 2 + OMF 1 center-concentrated. Weak sides, strong center. Often used mid-tier HS / college.
3-Step Press Avoidance
How to escape high press.
Step 1: 'One-Touch Switch' Habit
Under press = one-touch direction-change pass. Forward difficult → side/back → re-progress from new angle. 'Don't hold' is rule.
Step 2: Triangle Numerical Superiority
Always form 'triangles.' CB-SB-DMF 3-player 3 pass lanes. Triangle apex varies; opponent press blocks 1, next appears.
Step 3: 'Long-Ball Escape' Option
Fully trapped = no forced short pass, FW long ball. Concede-avoidance > ambition. 'No force, reset OK' mental.
Youth Implementation
Phased approach.
MS 1-2: Basic Pass + GK Join
GK short pass, CB → DMF → CMF vertical, SB inside-tuck 3 habits. Skills + tactics parallel.
MS 3 - HS 1: Triangle Pass
'Always triangle.' Practice immediate 'triangle failure' indication. 1-season automatic triangle passing.
HS 2-3: Formation Transform
Conscious 4-3-3 → 2-3-5 or 3-2-5 transform. Tier 1 HS operate at this level.
