Heatstroke Prevention Complete Guide — WBGT 31°C Decision / Match Cancel Criteria / Hydration / 7 Iron Rules to Save Youth Lives

Summer soccer tournaments: heatstroke 300-500/yr in Japan, fatal cases reported. Youth thermoregulation immature; match excitement masks danger. WBGT index, cancel criteria, hydration strategy, parent prep, emergency protocol per JFA + Environment Ministry guidelines.

WBGT Index — Official Heat Standard

Temperature alone insufficient; humidity + radiation included = WBGT.

What is WBGT

Wet Bulb Globe Temperature. Temperature (black globe) + humidity (wet bulb). Air 30°C + humidity 90% = WBGT 32°C 'exercise principle cancel.' Temperature-alone view = dangerous.

WBGT Response (Environment Ministry)

WBGT 28-31°C: extreme caution (active rest). 31°C+: exercise principle cancel (youth = effectively cancel). 35°C+: absolute cancel. Real-time regional WBGT on Environment Ministry website.

JFA Match Cancel Standard

JFA: WBGT 31°C+ 'exercise cancel principle,' organizer judgment if proceed = extended hydration + halftime mandatory. Many tournaments cancel/postpone at 31°C+.

Hydration Strategy — Pre / During / Post

During-only insufficient. Pre/post strategy = dehydration prevention key.

Pre-Match 2-3hr: Water Storage

500-700ml 2-3hr pre. OS-1 / Pocari Sweat etc. electrolyte drinks best. +200-300ml 30min pre. Start with zero dehydration.

During Match: 15-Min Hydration

Normal halves + HT insufficient. 15-min cooling breaks during match. 100-200ml × 5-6 = 600-1200ml in-match.

Halftime: Heavy + Cool

300-500ml + neck/armpit ice. Core temp drops dramatically; 2nd-half performance maintained.

Post-Match: Dehydration Recovery + Electrolytes

Within 2hr, 150% of weight-loss water (1kg = 1.5L). Sodium + potassium drinks = electrolyte restoration.

Warning Signs — Immediate Match End

Player/coach/parent know. Catch early = avoid severity.

Stage 1: Mild (Watch)

Dizziness, mild headache, profuse sweat, leg cramps, slower than usual. Early signs; rest + hydration + cool = recoverable.

Stage 2: Moderate (Immediate End)

Nausea, worse headache, sweating stopped, cold skin, dim consciousness. Severe; immediate end + cool place + ambulance judgment.

Stage 3: Severe (Emergency)

Unconscious, seizure, body temp 40°C+, breathing trouble. Life-threatening; ambulance + immediate cool (ice water, neck/armpit ice). 1 min counts.

Parent Prep for Summer Tournament

Watching + child support prep list.

Items (Tournament Day)

OS-1 500ml × 2, Pocari 500ml × 2, water 1L, ice pack (instant chemical cool), hand towel, salt tablets, sunscreen, hat (if allowed), emergency contact.

Watching Checkpoints

(1) Child movement slowed?, (2) HT direct talk + symptom check, (3) 'Report without holding back' pre-agreed. Parent observation = early detection.

Pre-Education: 'Reporting Isn't Weakness'

Players hide symptoms ('don't bother coach,' 'don't look weak'). Parent pre-teach: 'reporting = saves life.' Most important prevention.
