Offside 2024-25 Latest Rules — Post-IFAB Standards / 'Active Involvement' / Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT) Mechanics
Offside revised 2024-25 by IFAB: 'active involvement' expanded + Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT) full deployment changed operation significantly. Covers 4 requirements, revision points, SAOT mechanics, typical decisions, attacking application.
4 Offside Requirements
All 4 must align.
| # | Requirement | Content | SAOT Improvement |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Offside position | In front of DF (CB) + GK in opponent half | 29-point auto measure |
| 2 | At pass moment | Judgment at 0.1s pass instant | 50×/sec ball position detect |
| 3 | Active involvement | Touch / interfere / block movement | 2024 revision: 'movement block only' |
| 4 | Pass intentional | Bounce or accidental DF clearance doesn't trigger | AI determination |
All 4 needed for offside. SAOT (Semi-Automated Offside) drastically improves accuracy
R1: In Offside Position
Closer to goal than 'ball' and 'second-last defender' (= ahead of CB + GK). Position itself ≠ violation, prerequisite only.
R2: Offside Position at Pass Moment
Decision at 'moment of pass.' If defender drops back later, attacker still offside. SAOT precisifies this 0.1s judgment.
R3: Active Involvement
Ball touch, play interference, or defender obstruction = active. 'Standing still' ≠ offside. 2024 revision tightened 'visual interference.'
R4: Pass Intentional (Not Bounce/Random)
Off defender clearance / accidental bounce = no offside. Only 'attacker intentional pass.' Complex; SAOT precisifies.
Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT) Mechanics
Full from 2022 WC; Europe + J League since 2024.
SAOT What
Stadium ceiling 12 dedicated cameras + ball internal chip measure 29 player body points + ball position 50×/sec. Offside calc in 0.5s. Provides VAR data.
Accuracy
Cm-level. 'Toe-tip ahead' / 'shoulder-out' = offside. Spectator + viewer 3D animation display.
VAR Integration
SAOT decides → VAR judges → tells ref. No OFR (On-Field Review); immediate decision. Decision speed cut (old 1-2min → new 30sec).
2024 Revision: Active Involvement Interpretation
'Visual interference' tightened; favors attackers.
Pre-Revision Judgment
Off-position player 'entering GK view' = offside possible. Attackers disadvantaged often.
Post-Revision Judgment
Only 'physically blocking GK movement' = offside. View entry alone + no movement effect = no offside. Attack chances up.
Example: Cross Header
Off player crosses in front of GK, another player heads. Pre: 'visual obstruction' offside; Post: no offside unless 'movement blocked.' Goal increase factor.
Attacker Tactical Application
Maximize attack chances via rule understanding.
'Onside-Line Edge' Positioning
FW parallel to DF line + start half-step behind. Time pass = move forward → SAOT onside. Tier 1 FW (Haaland, Mbappe) masters.
'Fake Run' Feint
1 player in off position pulls DF; another runs late. Post-revision 'no visual obstruction OK' utilized.
'Restart Bait' Offside
Attacker intentionally off-position pass → offside → opponent DF FK start. Deep-position defense-reset tactic.
