PVS vs Other Metrics — Transfermarkt, Wyscout, WhoScored Compared

Transfermarkt asks 'what would this player sell for now?' Wyscout asks 'how is this pro performing?' WhoScored asks 'what was the match-level statistical performance?' Stats Perform TPI asks 'integrated tactical contribution?' Footnote PVS asks something different: 'how is this developing player's growth trajectory?' Pro indices barely work for youth players (low match counts, no market value). PVS is designed for the youth segment. This article compares the 5 indices on 4 axes and outlines clear usage guidance.

Transfermarkt — Report-Aggregation Model

World's largest player database. Market value derives from media reports + contract figures + age + remaining contract — community-curated reference value widely cited in transfer negotiations.

Transfermarkt holds 700K+ player records but market value is assigned only to pro-league players. J League: J1-J3 only; youth U-18 only for select prospects with pro signing prospects. Middle school, high school, and academy players are out of scope.

How values are determined

Not algorithmic — community + editorial judgment based on reported fees, media valuations, and editor discretion. Transparency is limited; individual valuations sometimes face accusations of being 'too high' or 'too low.'

When to use vs PVS

Transfermarkt is best for current market evaluation of pro players. Footnote PVS is best for the 6-12 month growth trajectory of developing/youth players. The two are complementary — Footnote's transfer_records table can reference Transfermarkt data as confidence_level='estimated'.

Wyscout / Player Index — Pro Match Analysis

European pro club scouting platform. Player Index extracts objective data from match video → integrated 0-100 score.

Wyscout analyzes 600+ leagues globally. Pro and semi-pro players covered; J League partially (J1-J2 only). Youth/high school/university leagues not covered (except top prospects). Per match, 1,500+ events extracted via automated + manual analysis.

When to use vs PVS

Wyscout strong on pro-readiness evaluation. PVS strong on youth growth trajectory. Pro club reinforcement departments naturally pair them: 'PVS for U-23 → top promotion candidates, Wyscout for senior recruit scouting.' After Phase K (Footnote video analysis) is implemented, youth match video will also be analyzable.

WhoScored Rating — Match-Level Statistical Score

WhoScored.com publishes per-match player ratings (1-10) based on Opta data — fast, real-time scoring updated within hours of match end.

Coverage: pro leagues (Europe Top 5, Champions League, J1, etc.) only — match-participating players. Opta event data (passes, shots, key chances, ball recovery) aggregated via algorithm. Speed advantage: scores within hours of match end.

When to use vs PVS

WhoScored is best for 'what just happened in this match.' PVS is best for 'cumulative growth over the past month.' WhoScored fluctuates weekly; PVS is stable monthly. Use WhoScored for fans tracking match performance, PVS for coaches understanding a player's developmental arc.

5-Index Comparison Matrix

Coverage, data source, update frequency, accuracy prerequisites — and who should look at which when.

Coverage

  • Transfermarkt: Pro players generally (some youth)
  • Wyscout: Pro + semi-pro with video access
  • WhoScored: European top-5 leagues + key tournaments
  • Stats Perform TPI: Pro broadcast-rights leagues
  • Footnote PVS: All active Footnote players (U-12 to adult — instant coverage on registration)

Youth Development Value

Transfermarkt/Wyscout/WhoScored/TPI all struggle with continuous youth data. PVS is purpose-built for youth — integrating attendance, training, match, and psychological data. For youth reinforcement, parents, and coaches: PVS. For pro scouting: Wyscout/Transfermarkt.

Early Warning Detection

PVS Mental score includes attendance, continuity, and motivation — catching condition decline before it reaches match results. Pro indices, by contrast, only reflect condition decline after it appears in match data. For youth coaching, early intervention matters — PVS leads here.
