Osim's 'Running Football' Development Philosophy — Innovation in Volume + Decision Making at JEF Chiba / Japan National Team

Ivica Osim led JEF Chiba 2003-06 and Japan national team 2006-07, revolutionizing Japanese football with 'running football'. Not mere running — fusion of volume + decision-making + polyvalent (utility). Covers his 3-pillar philosophy, innovative training methods, JEF Chiba golden era tactics, modern youth application.

Osim Philosophy — 3 Pillars

Extracted from his books + colleague testimony.

1Running with ThinkingTrčanje s razmišljanjemVolume + tactical fusion; running to create thinking timeKlopp / Guardiola
2PolyvalentPolyvalent1 player covers 3-4 positions, universal capabilityPep / Nagelsmann
3Diversity Over HomogeneityDiverse-ability mix > same-ability mixKlopp Liverpool

Established at JEF Chiba (2003-06) + Japan NT (2006-07). Origin of 'Japan-ization' concept

1. 'Running with Thinking' (Trčanje s razmišljanjem)

Just running = mechanical; just thinking = no volume. Osim demanded 'run 90 min while thinking positioning + pass lanes + opponent weaknesses'. 'Running is means, not end — run to create thinking time.'

2. Polyvalent — Multi-Position Capability

1 player covers 3-4 positions. 'Stopper-MF', 'attacking SB', 'defensive WG' — blur boundaries. Enables flexible in-match substitutions + tactical shifts. Suzuki Keita, Abe Yuki, Hanyu Naotake (JEF Chiba polyvalent stars → Japan NT).

3. 'Diversity Over Homogeneity'

'Teams of same-ability players are fragile; teams of diverse abilities are strong.' Mix technical + physical + tactical + running. Don't correct individuality at development stage.

Innovative Training Methods

Multi-color bibs, 3-group parallel, rule-change games — studied worldwide.

4-5 Color Bibs Simultaneously

Traditional 2-color (red/blue) — Osim uses 4-5. 'Red+blue vs yellow+green+white'. Adds rules like 'red+blue play hand-held ball as foot kick, yellow normal'. Multi-rule co-existence on one pitch = ultimate decision drill.

3-Group Parallel Practice

Pitch split 3 zones, different drills each (A pass, B 1v1, C mini-game). Rotate every 5 min. Concentration + situational adaptability training.

Rule Variation Game

Mid-game changes: '3-touch limit', 'header only', 'all hold by hand'. Instant adaptation + tactical change drill. Develops 'football brain' more than skill.

JEF Chiba Golden Era Tactics (2003-06)

Under Osim: J2 → J1 → Nabisco Cup champions 2005/2006.

3-5-2 / 4-3-3 Hybrid Formation

Defending 3-5-2, attacking 4-3-3 fluidly. SB advances in attack as CMF covers; CB forward — predecessor of modern 'reversed/inverted fullback'.

Organized Pressing from Front

2 FW + 1 OMF press opposition DF; back line stays high. 'High press + compact defense' — prototype of modern Klopp/Guardiola. Revolutionary for J League at the time.

Nabisco Cup Back-to-Back (2005-06)

2005 final 1-0 Gamba, 2006 final 2-0 Kashima. 'Fatigue opponent's core + decisive late' = Osim's 90-min design.

Japan NT 2006-07 — 'Japan-ization'

Proposed 'Japan-ization' — football fitting Japanese traits.

'Japan-ization' Essence

Don't mimic Italian/Spanish style — leverage Japanese traits (running, organization, discipline). Concept later influenced Okada Takeshi and Zaccheroni eras.

Selection — Midfield Creativity Focus

Nakamura Shunsuke, Endo Yasuhito, Ogasawara Mitsuo, Abe Yuki, Hanyu Naotake — technique + judgment over pure physicality.

Stroke Resignation + Unfinished Legacy

Nov 2007 stroke → resigned. Okada succeeded. 'Japan-ization' indirectly contributed to South Africa 2010 Round of 16. His 'thinking football' remains in youth coaching texts.

Modern Youth Application

4 concrete practice applications.

1. Release Position Fixation

Not 'you're SB only' — rotate 3-4 positions per season. MS-age utility = future scout edge (university/pro evaluation).

2. Intentional Rule Changes in Practice

'3-touch limit', 'weak foot only', 'must pass through zone'. Weekly variations = enormous decision-making growth.

3. Multi-Color Bibs in Mini-Game

3-4 colors + complex match-ups (red vs blue+yellow, first-touch flips yellow to red side) = explosive situational judgment growth. MS-applicable.

4. Habituate 'Thinking While Running'

In running drills: 'imagine 3 next plays while running'. Builds simultaneous decision habit → dramatic in-match decision speed gain.
